TMI about TMT

My name is Andy Dass. In the fall of 2017, I started Tangletown Math Tutors, LLC. For many years, “Tangletown Math tutor” would’ve been a more apt name for the company, as I was the only math tutor on staff. Within the last year, though, the company has grown by 100% after the addition of another tutor. This booming growth is expected to continue.

I graduated from St. Olaf College with a BA in Mathematics, and have nine years of experience as a classroom math teacher (Eight of which were at minneapolis Washburn High School). I’m a Grade 7-12 Licensed math teacher with Several Years of experience teaching algebra 1 through calc 2 (Including IB Classes) at the high school level. Teaching this variety of classes was an invaluable, fun experience, as it provided the opportunity to work with students whose math skills, confidence, enthusiasm, and readiness span the gamut. "effort creates ability" is a phrase i heard early in my teaching career, and i’m a subscriber to that motto.

I live in south minneapolis with my wife and two daughters - Bryn (5.5) and ingrid (2.833333). In addition to tutoring and Fatherhood, earned my Master’s in Mathematics after leaving the high school classroom. Since then I’ve worked as an adjunct faculty member for university’s in alabama and st. Paul Minnesota, teaching pre-calculus through calc 2. my content knowledge is fresh and expanding, making me well-equipped to help students with college coursework beyond introductory calc. I have significant experience tutoring students from major universities (ivy league, big ten, big twelve, pac twelve) in college calculus, college probability, statistics with calculus, Multi-variable Calculus, and abstract algebra, among other university level courses.

Weekly sessions

Most of my tutoring commitments involve meeting weekly in a one-on-one setting with a student. This is a common choice for students and families. For many students, discussing a week’s worth of material in one session is achievable. Meeting on a weekly basis also helps students plan for tutoring, as it becomes part of their regular schedule. Moreover, meeting with a weekly frequency means students aren’t trying to cram too much into one session. Some students who are taking particularly challenging courses elect to meet more than once a week. If you choose to meet weekly, we are locked in for a weekly date and time that works for us both. Weekly sessions also cost a bit less than impromptu sessions.

Impromptu Sessions

Students who have had to miss class because of an illness, who have a busy sports schedule, or who just need a session or two to get caught up on a particular topic may choose to schedule impromptu sessions. The rate for impromptu sessions is a bit higher than the rate for weekly sessions.

Courses

Oftentimes students and families are in search of learning options that aren’t provided by their school. This may include enrichment courses for students who love math, review courses for students who want to bolster their skills heading into a new class, or a full year’s worth of a high school class to make room for a higher math class down the road. On a personal note, these courses are one of my favorite things about tutoring. Some examples of courses I’ve taught in the past include: a full year’s worth of high school geometry (I’ve done this several times, and each student has tested out of geometry); a preview to IB HL 2 math with a focus on problem solving; a semester’s worth of college calculus; a confidence-boosting review of Algebra / preview of Algebra 2, with content designed to meet students where they are. Because of time constraints, these courses normally take place during the summer.

Rates

As of the 2022 school year, the hourly rate for a tutoring session is determined by: whether the sessions are weekly or impromptu; the course the student is taking; whether the session is online or in person; the travel time (if any) required to meet with the student. So you have an idea of whether my offerings are within your budget, the most low-cost option available is $60 per session, and the cost may increase from there depending on the specifics of your request. If you think this may work for you, please fill out a contact form, and I will follow up with pricing options.

Reviews of TMT

I have had two kids tutor with Andy over the past couple of years. He has been fantastic. Most recently, he taught my daughter an entire year of Geometry over a three month period so that she could test out of it at her private high school. She can now take pre-calculus next year as a high school sophomore. I would highly recommend Andy. He is easy to schedule with, has the ability to simplify complicated math concepts for the kids, and is a genuinely nice guy! Truly the best.

Andy worked with my son to help him make up a semester of HL1 IB math that he would be missing due to a study abroad type program. My son was able to jump back in at HL2 IB math this fall with no problem after working with Andy for some time before and after his missed semester. I would recommend working with Andy for higher level high school math assistance.

Our son really benefitted from working with Andy last year. Andy tutored him in Advanced Algebra and with only meeting once a week for 60 minutes, Andy was sufficiently able to teach and reinforce the needed material for my son to get A in the class. My son really liked working with Andy and I would definitely use Andy again in the future.
